I recently came across a tape online where popular Nigerian preacher, Dr Abel Damina said the following: “My regret in ministry is that when I started nobody taught me about bible interpretation. Until a man of God can interpret scripture, he will preach nonsense all his life.
“And after many years, he will be apologising repeatedly because he has preached nonsense. If you don’t know bible interpretation and you are a minister of the gospel get ready to apologise for the rest of your life.”
The foregoing kind of sets understanding of scripture as the basic requirement for anyone who wants to become a pastor. Thus, merely attending a Bible School, Theological College or Seminary doesn’t quite cut it.
Be that as it may, my fault with the man’s postulation is in him wishing that some Bible scholar had taught him when he started ministry. No sir, you would still have run into the same problem even if a modern-day Gamaliel taught you the Bible. The Grand Maester can be wrong as well, thereby causing his protégés to start apologising when they know better.
This is why I had expected that Damina wished the Holy Spirit taught him the Bible instead of some man. That way, he would have been infallible. John 14:26 says, “But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you.”
A pastor I know who was privileged to come under the tutelage of the Holy Ghost has since been telling anyone who cares to listen, that he was happy he didn’t author a book based on his hitherto understanding of the Bible. Given he present knowledge which is at variance with what he preached earlier, he would have recalled and tore the copies.
According to Hebrews 13:8, Jesus Christ (being the Word) is the same yesterday, today, and forever. Therefore, let him who preaches look to the Holy Spirit for understanding so that they wouldn’t have to go about apologising for teaching falsehood over the years!
